What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a somatic educational method to learn about your body and mind in action. By emphasizing on awareness and choice in your daily life's activities, the Alexander Technique strengthens the connections of mind and body within yourself. Through gentle, hands-on guidance, the Alexander teacher leads the student through daily motions such as walking or sitting in a chair. By maintaining constructive energy, the teacher transfers to the student a sense of lightness and ease in the activity, which the student learns to create for themselves over time.
History of the TechniqueThe Technique was created by the late F.M. Alexander, a Tasmanian-born actor and orator. At the height of his performing career, Alexander suffered from recurring vocal hoarseness that doctors had no recourse for other than rest or surgery. Rather than subject himself to the procedure, Alexander spent years observing his own behavior in speaking and everyday life and developed his method of thought and movement in order to escape harmful habits. His hoarseness vanished, and he began to teach others his new way of learning about ourselves and our actions. Alexander taught his Technique in Sydney, London, New York, and Boston during his life; and now there are 17 organizations across the world sharing his discoveries and continuing the work with students.
